What are F1 vs. F1b vs. F2b Goldendoodles?
What does F1 Mean?
F stands for filial, which means that the dog is a crossbred dog and not a purebred dog. All Goldendoodles are a crossbred between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. The number "1" means that this will be a first generation offspring.
50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.
F1 Goldendoodles have a health benefit called Hybrid Vigor. This means the dog will be healthier than their purebred parent dogs. Since this is a crossbred dog, genetic defects that would be in purebred breeding won't be passed down... just medical genetic problems that can be common to the Poodle and Golden Retriever.
The coat type could be straight or wavy, or curly. They are not guaranteed to be Hypoallergenic or Non-shedding.
What does F1b Mean?
The meaning of F1b is the same as F1, except the letter "B" stands for Backcross. Backcross means that an F1 dog is a backcross bred with a purebred parent breed (poodle). This Goldendoodle is 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever.
Most breeders choose to backcross the F1b breed with a purebred Poodle because of the non shedding and hypoallergenic features. F1b's are extremely hypoallergenic which is a great option for individuals with severe allergies.
F1b Goldendoodles do have less of the Hybrid Vigor trait than the F1 Goldendoodle. As the generation of Goldendoodles increases, the less the Hybrid Vigor trait they inherit.
F1b's do tend to cost a little more because of their hypoallergenic coat. They also have more curly hair than F1's, requiring more grooming on the owner's part.
What does F2b Mean?
The meaning of F2b is by crossing an F1b Goldendoodle with an F1b Goldendoodle. These doodles result in the F2B offspring being 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle.
Like a standard poodle, an F2b Goldendoodle has a shaggy, curly coat of any color. Of all the F2b Goldendoodle characteristics, the most important is their hypoallergenic coats.
F2b Goldendoodles are easily trained to do tricks, like sit, shake hands, and roll over.
Their gentle demeanor makes them great for apartment living. They don’t bark much or make a lot of noise.
F2b Goldendoodles need someone to play with at all times. They love playing with children and other pets, making them good candidates for families with young kids.
But don’t let their gentle nature fool you; they’re also very protective and will defend their families if they feel the need.
F1b Goldendoodles does require grooming needs. These fluffy pups need frequent haircuts and daily brushing.
F1b's do tend to cost the most in these generations because of their hypoallergenic coat. They have the least shedding of all goldendoodle generations.
